Abstract
This paper describes the manner in which the performance of laments creates a symbolic female universe that in many ways affects female activity in their day-to-day existence. The author examines the intricate dimensions of this universe as they relate to the larger context of the village in which lamentation is performed, and considers the remarkable aesthetic, ritual, and social elements of lament performance and how they interrelate. The first part of this study focuses on the performance process itself, while the second part examines the point of convergence between the separate world of women involved in death rituals and the mainstream of public life in the village and beyond (pp. 170-171).
