Abstract
This is a study of commercial transactions between peasants and shepherds and merchants, traders, and bank officials, which often operate at the patron-client level of relationship. Campbell describes two market transactions involving market situations involving the patron-client type of relationship: (1) the sale of milk by Sarakatsani shepherds of the Zagori district to merchants who then convert this product into cheese, and (2) and the sale of vegetables and fruits by Greek farmers to wholesale merchants in the Greater Athens area who then sell the products to retailers in the region. The author describes in detail the relationships involved in these marketing transactions, including data on the issuing of credit by merchants to their producer clients.
