Abstract
In this paper Campbell discusses the circumstances under which he developed an interest in doing fieldwork, and the eventual fieldwork itself, in 1954-1955, among the Sarakatsani pastoralist of Zagori district in the Pindus mountains of Greece. The author, accompanied by his wife, describes their experiences in traveling with an encampment of Sarakatsani as they herded their flocks down to the plains of Thesprotia for their winter pasturage. Most of the information in this study deals with the establishment of rapport with the nomadic group, but little ethnographic data is actually provided on these people.
