Abstract
This is a study of the Iban's custom of BEJALAI -- a journey or expedition undertaken by men with the intent of acquiring material profit or social prestige -- and the effect of such travels on the society left behind. The author discusses various views on BEJALAI, the material rewards of such journeys, its demographic effects, effects on children and women, the community's response, and expected norms of behavior for those undertaking BEJALAI.
