Abstract
This work is the biography of an exceptional man, Tun Jugah, whose political career lasted half a century. Tun Jugah occupied the highest positions created for native leaders, offices that did not exist within traditional Iban society (p. 67). Tun Jugah served both the Brooke and British administrations, first as PENGHULU ('district' leader), and later as TEMENGGONG (paramount chief). Later he became the one and only Federal Minister for Sarawak Affairs in the Federation of Malaysia of which Sarawak became part in 1963. The biography includes a wealth of data on various aspects of Iban ethnology (e.g., history, subsistence, social organization, migrations, demography) and information on the World War II period of Japanese occupation, and post-war politics leading up to the incorporation of Sarawak into the Federation.
