Abstract
This article provides a brief account of changes that have occurred in the family structure of an Indian village in 1907-1957. Based on ethnographic information collected in 1955-1956, the authors identified important changes including the relaxation of parda (seclusion of women) and general decline in the composition and size of the extended family. One of the reasons for these changes was the expansion of education which had the effect of changing family and gender relations as unmarried family members migrated away from their villages in search of government jobs and other employment opportunities.
