The internal structure of the Nayar caste

Journal of anthropological research31 (4) • Published In 1975 • Pages: 283-312

By: Fuller, C. J..

Abstract
This document reassesses the internal divisions and functions of the Nayar caste system. Earlier ethnographers tended to exaggerate the number of Nayar castes and sub-castes. The structures of the system consisted of an analytically distinguishable core and periphery, the former consisting of demographically larger units that endured over the years, and the latter consisting of many smaller subdivisions that occurred due to wider changes in marriage rules, residence pattern and government policy.
