Abstract
This document discusses the differential impacts of a joint Indian and Norwegian aid project on Araya caste and Catholic fishing communities, finding that most of the economic benefits went to members of the Catholic community. Drawing on Weber’s theory of the role of religious values in influencing economic development, the author attributes this variation to contrasting values of the two communities, finding the Catholics more receptive of emerging economic opportunities and technological change. The Araya response differed because wealth accumulation and profit-seeking are at odds with their core values.
