Abstract
This article focuses on marriage among the Tara Khel Pashtun nomads of eastern Afghanistan. The author describes engagement practices, activities of the betrothed, and the marriage ceremony among the Tara Khel Pashtun and analyzes Tara Khel marriage patterns and their determinants. The author concludes that while the Tara Khel Pashtun tend to follow a norm of endogamy, the boundaries within which marriage partners are sought for young people by their elders are flexible and reflect the influence of the demographic, economic, and political experiences of each household and lineage.
