Direct exchange and brideprice: alternative forms in a complex marriage system

Man, n.s.16 (3) • Published In 1981 • Pages: 387-407

Abstract
This source analyzes marriage among the Durrani Pashtun of Afghan Turkestan in terms of two modes: 1) symmetrical direct exchange marriages that conform to Durrani egalitarian ideals and define Durrani ethnic identity and 2) asymmetrical brideprice marriages that create and maintain a status hierarchy between households. The author suggests that the ambiguities in the values of the two modes of marriage are manipulated by the Durrani to make status claims.
