Abstract
This article recounts a Garo folktale and simliar versions found in other parts of India. The folktale is about a chieftan's (or 'king' in other versions) secret knowledge of understanding animal language and near loss of that power and his life when his wife wished to learn the secret. What powers you have are your's, keep them to yourself.
