Abstract
This study represents an empirical investigation directed toward the solution of a specific ethnographic problem relevant to the question of why, in a world filled with violence, do the Semai Senoi shun violence toward their fellow human beings. Robarchek, using a systems perspective that conceives of behavior at any level of analysis to be the product of a complex interaction on a variety of levels of organization examines the sources, maintenance and transmission of this non-violent orientation. The author's approach to this problem emphasizes circular rather than linear causality, goal direction, positive and negative feedback, and a holistic and synthetic methodology. The actual sources of the non-violent behavior are thus sought in organic, organismic and sociocultural processes utilizing a number of theories from psychiatry, psychology, sociology and anthropology.
