Abstract
The expressed purpose of this work is to describe and analyze Malayan political institutions as part of a working social system adapted to the needs of the community in which they occur. The author chose to present conditions of about 1870, the time of the height of indigenous political development before British administration was predominant; the material reflects practices throughout the Malay states but cites examples from Perak, Sealngor, and Negri Sembilan with some references to Pahang and Kedah. Geographical, historical, and foreign influences are first presented, then political institutions at various levels are discussed with due consideration of their functions with regard to the class structure, economic factors, land and war requirements, religious organization and many other aspects. In short, this is a complex analysis indicating the thorough integration of Malayan political institutions with other parts of the culture.
