Abstract
This essay explores continueties abnd changes in the was female subjectivity is defined in state discourses in socialist former North Vietnam. It also discusses the effects of this discourse on women's health and social status. In doing so, the author argues that women's everyday talk about health problems and physical weakness may be considered not only as passive suggering but also as active performance.
