Abstract
This is an excellent general analysis of Vietnamese religions by one of the great authorities on the subject. It provides a good framework and general background for the study of Vietnamese religious life in particular, and Vietnamese culture in general. The author, Father Léopold Cadière, was a missionary and scholar who spent many years in Indochina, and according to reports, died there in 1949 while being held as a hostage by the Viet-Minh. He was a corresponding member of the école Française d'Extreme-Orient and editor of the BULLETIN DES AMIS DU VIEUX HUé. In addition to his studies in the field of religion, Father Cadière contributed important studies in the history, art and language of the Vietnamese. In 1945 he was awarded the Literary Prize of Indochina.
