Abstract
The sacrifice of the Nam Giao was formerly the greatest of Annamese ceremonies, at which time the Emperor sacrificed to Heaven as the representative of his people. The authors, a missionary and a civil servant, respectively, describe this ceremony as they witnessed it in 1915. The article consists of first-hand observations supplemented at great length by excerpts from documents and notices pertaining to the ceremony, quoted by permission of the mandarins of the Court of Annam. The authors present a detailed description of the sacrifice through its preliminary preparations, procession, ritual and invocations. The participants, layout, dances and various objects are also carefully described.
