Abstract
This is one of a series of articles on Annamese customs which were published between 1880 and 1883. Landes was one-time mayor of Cholon, and the data for these articles evidently are the result of some years of experience and observation as a resident of Cochinchina. Landes seems to have been careful and objective and on the whole the data given here correspond with information found in other sources. The present article contains notes on a variety of subjects, including such things as smallpox, rituals for propitiating the spirits of the original owners of the land, assorted beliefs about luck, ideas about animals, bride-service, premarital sex relations, illegitimacy, etc.
