Abstract
Dutreuil de Rhins was a French naval officer who was given command of one of five warships presented to the King of Annam in 1876. His impressions of the land and the people, while strongly biased and subjective, are of some importance because of the date (1876) and because of his encounters with Vietnamese who had little contact with the French up to that point. His observations cover aspects of the society that are usually found in theoretical form, such as the power of the Emperor and the mandarins. He also presented information on the military, the state of trade (with statistics), descriptions of the topography based on explorations, and charts of meteorological data, etc. While some of the material in this source has not been classified because of its lack of specific ethnographic material on Vietnamese culture, it is of sufficient merit to warrant reading the entire source for such Vietnamese reactions to French culture as are described here. Dutreuil de Rhins has transliterated Vietnamese names phonetically into French. Where exact identification has been possible, the Vietnamese (QUOC NGU) has also been given.
