Abstract
This document discusses how one Khmer story (a story called "Mea Yoeng") has been used and re-used to illuminate Khmer conception of gender as a system of symbols, social order, and the processes of culture change. It argues that the story to served different purposes in completely new situations by providing innovative solutions under the rubric of "tradition."
