Abstract
This is a discussion of how Yi villagers in the 1990s talk about the Yi rotating headship system of the 1930s and 40s. The system was formed in part to accommodate the demands on Yi hospitality by traveling Han Chinese officials and military personnel. What interests the author is how present-day Yi represent the system in ways that tie them to their land, community and history, and express their Yi nationality.
