Abstract
The author has written an account of an exorcizing ceremony that he personally observed at Wan-teh village, Mou-lien district, in the Wu-ting area (the town of Wu-ting is approximately 35 miles northwest of Kunming), Yünan. His coverage of the ceremony is fairly extensive, including sacrifice, the legendary basis of the ceremony, and the ceremonial objects used. The importance of the Pai-mao (native religious practitioner) is clearly, though inferentially, brought out. Other topics mentioned in this source are omens and divination; attitudes toward spirits; spirit theory of disease; and attitudes towards government officials. The Lolo villagers described in this article are Black Lolo (Heh-i).
