Abstract
This is a sociological study of the township of Sangongni, a collection of small hamlets in the mountains approximately twenty-five kilometers southwest of Ch'unch'on, the capital of South Korea's Kangwon Province. This book deals with various aspects of social change in Korean peasant households and the manner in which the peasants have adapted to rapid industrialization in the region. In addition to detailed descriptions of the households, Sorenson presents data on social theory (related to socio-cultural change), the effects of the mountain environment on the community, subsistence activities (mainly agricultural), economic productivity, cultural adaptation techniques, labor supply, the changing family cycle, migration to the cities, and land tenure patterns.
