The social and psychological role of the Korean sorceress

Abstract
This excellent paper on the social and psychological role of the Mudang is based upon interviews with native-born Koreans, who resided in the Los Angeles area. Turner's thesis is that the Mudang 'represents an institutionalized outlet for the emotional expression of deviant and aberrant women with accompanying low social status.' An additional role is that 'the Mudang further represents an institutionalized outlet for the psychological relief of its participants without a concomitant change in social status.' The monograph contains a fine brief summary of socialization in Korea but omits any discussion of the functions that the Mudang fulfills in Korean society except by implication.
