Abstract
Aläqa Gäbre-Hanna was a popular wit in the court of Emperor Menelik and among the populace. His stories and witticisms have been transmitted orally from generation to generation. The stories in this article were gathered from the Amharic-speaking peasants and nobles in his native province.
