Abstract
This is a research report from the the American Anthropologist discussing how the need for conflict resolution has led to political centralization among newly sedentary foragers. No longer able 'to vote with one's feet' and move away when tensions arise, !Kung seek outsiders to arbitrate disputes. In the new settlement of Kutse the lack of headmen or nearby persons of authority has resulted in numerous fights, one of which Kent analyzes in detail.
