The kingdom of Wambu (Huambo): a tentative chronology

Journal of African history3 • Published In 1964 • Pages: 367-379

By: Childs, Gladwyn Murray.

Abstract
Wambu (Huambo) is one of the oldest Ovimbundu kingdoms, established around 1640, although legend points to a prior reign of kings and queens. The Jaga warrior Wambu Kalunga took over the kingdom without a fight, but was later assassinated by a local war leader, Kesonga, who reestablished the vaNganda royal line. Based on traditional reports, archaeological evidence, and historical documents, Childs chronicles the dynastic line up to the 25th king, Livonge, whose rule ended with the Bailundu Revolt in 1902.
