Abstract: “The Art of Healing among the Azande” by De Graer includes a few preliminary pages of general explanation on the Azande conception of disease and its cure, followed by a discussion of the characteristics of each disease and its native remedies, filed alphabetically by the Azande name. Some 124 diseases are described. De Graer attempts no estimate as to the efficacy of these Azande remedies, although he often includes the native theory behind the remedy and the etymological origin of the name of the disease. The last 18 pages of the article consist of an alphabetical table of plants and animals used as remedies with a brief description of each and a list of the diseases each is used to treat.
