Abstract
This work presents a general ethnography of the Gusii community of Nyansongo in Kenya, East Africa, covering roughly the period of 1930-1957. Emphasis in the study is on the various degrees to which childhood experiences in the first years of life determine the child's behavior, and in adult life, influence his/her's perception of the world, philosophy of life, religion, and code of ethics. Theories of the relationship between specific types of treatment in early childhood and subsequent personality differences have been advanced by psychologists and anthropologists. It is the attempt of this monograph to test some of these hypotheses using as a basis of testing the relevant ethnographic data from Nyansongo often where families have divergent ways of life and theories and methods of training young children (p. v).
