Abstract
The central theme of this article is the role of the lineage system in the relationship between the government and the mass of the people. Lineages, associations, and the state are found to be closely affiliated among the Yoruba. The author discusses the nature and the constitutional relationships among these elements in four kingdoms: the Kabba, Ekiti, Oyo, and Ijebu, and summarizes his findings emphasizing the differences and similarities observed. Traditional history, governmental structure, age groups, lineage organization, and individual status are all treated to some extent.
