Abstract
The term lineage as discussed in this article is the patrilineal descent group whose residence is the compound. Because of the legendary nature of lineage origins in most cases, this group has been indexed as a sib. Centering his attention on this kin based group, the author discusses various aspects of the physical and social organization of Yoruba residence compounds, town, and government. The nature of membership and legends of origin of some particular lineages are given, with an indication of intra-cultural differences that occur. At the time of publication the author was a Research Fellow in Anthropology at the West African Institute of Social and Economic Research, University of Ibadan, Southern Nigeria. The author cites data from Oyo and Ekiti as characteristic of most Yoruba subtribes.
