Abstract
This is the first of two sections of a study of diet among the Ife Yoruba; the second section, containing the recipes referred to in the first, is included in the Yoruba collection as 6: Bascom. The author is concerned with particular items in the diet, patterns of food consumption and the factors affecting such patterns, and the techniques of preparation of food. He emphasizes indigenous items and processes, although recognizing that European imports and methods are also used. Botanical names of food sources are given when known, and a bibliography is included. Bascom, an outstanding authority on the Yoruba, was at the University of California, Berkeley.
