Abstract
This study, conducted in April 1977, presents basic demographic characteristics of the Nupe village of Sakpe in Niger State. This village is located in a remote forest region of Nigeria and is predominantly a traditional Muslim farming community. Previous to this work there was little known about the demographic characteristics of the Nupe people. The only available information came from the Nigerian population censuses which the author believes were limited in scope, generally defective, and unreliable in content. Katcha, based on his fieldwork in the area, attempts to correct these deficiencies by providing updated information on birth rates, age-specific fertility rates, mortality rates, and related demographic factors such as marriage and breast-feeding practices.
