Abstract
This is a study of the artist-patron relationship among the Nupe of central Nigeria from the late nineteenth to the late twentieth centuries. Perani discusses the role of the noble and royal classes as important patrons of traditional Nupe crafts (brass and glass working, wood carving, etc.), and the manner in which these crafts were affected by the tourist trade and contact with other ethnic groups.
