Abstract
This source is a rather sophisticated comparison of agricultural production in four farming communities. It addresses some of the basic issues and problems of development in small-scale agriculture: the interplay among land-holding and use patterns, environment, crop mix, dietary preferences, labor value and fluctuations in commodity price. The author argues effectively that the concept of a generalized peasant conservatism as an explanation for lack of development is a poor substitute for more detailed data on the factors of production.
