Abstract
This book analyzes main features of 'African urbanism' by focusing on Ouagadougou, capital of Burkina Faso (formerly called Uppr Volta), as an example. The author views Ouagadougou as a node where a whole complex network of economic, social, and political relations meet, and argues that the attempt of people in this town to modernize and adapt to the urban milieu is characterized by a conscious manipulation of all insitutions within the town and components of urban life.
