Abstract
This is a short article, based largely on secondary sources, which examines the textile industry of the canton of Otavalo from pre-Incan times through the present. The author's thesis, developed throughout the source, is that textile-making on the part of the Otavalans has paradoxically acted as a buffer against total cultural demise while at the same time inviting exploitation by the several conquerers of the region.
