Abstract
This source focuses on significant events in Hopi history from aboriginal times to the mid-20th century. The topics covered include Hopi origins and migrations, contact with Spanish explorers and missionaries, Hopi-Spanish relations, contact with Euro-Americans and Mormon missionaries, the administration of the Hopi by the United States government, the civil war at Oraibi, and Hopi-White relations in the 19th and 20th centuries. The discussions of the administration of the Hopi by the United States are especially interesting and detailed, particularly with regard to the efforts of the Federal government's Indian agents to transform Hopi society and acculturate the Hopi. The author occasionally diverges to discussions of background material that is only indirectly related to Hopi history. The Appendix to this source includes the text of the Constitution and By-Laws of the Hopi Tribe.
