Abstract
This source addresses the degree of responsibility exercised by desas, village complexes, in the governance of their affairs. Employing information from informant interviews (most informants were desa leaders) and socio-economic and demographic data, the author explores the relationship between the degree of desa responsibility and influences from large cities, intervention by government agencies in desa affairs, relation of size and economic conditions, and conflict and leadership in the desa. She concludes that “The results of this study indicate that when the state of internal conflict and form of desa leadership both favor desa responsibility, the desa is either highly or moderately responsible for its efforts. At the other extreme, when both conditions are unfavorable for desa responsibility, the desa is low on responsibility”.
