Abstract
In this article, Koentjaraningrat discusses some of the theoretical problems of the kindred using data from the Javanese golongon. The data were collected from the South Seraju Hills of south Central Java. The problems discussed are the center of orientation of kindreds, the initiator of kindred activities, the boundaries of collateral extension of kindred, the inclusion or exclusion of affines, the conceptualization of absentees in kindred activities, and resolving conflicting obligations of participation in activities or overlapping kindreds which happen to occur simultaneously.
