Abstract
This article examines the relationship between explicit cultural forms or symbols and underlying cultural orientations in the society. The author assumes that the two are closely interrelated and that the symbolic forms themselves '…are the mechanism linking underlying cultural orientations to observable modes of socio-cultural action' (p. 49-A). Ortner elaborates on these points with detailed analysis of one such body of cultural forms represented by the concept of pollution among the Sherpas of Nepal.
