Family and lineage among the Suku of the Congo

Abstract
This document argues that the residential cycles of Suku families are shaped by the practical necessity of reconciling the two contradictory principles of Suku social organization: corporate autonomous matrilineages and clans, and residence rules that require each male child to reside with his father and paternal uncles. This led to a residence pattern in which the men of each matrilineage find themselves dispersed among several villages following marriage.
