Abstract
This general survey of Bambara culture is one of the series of monographs on African peoples sponsored by the International African Institute in London. The author has done field work in French West Africa. At the time she wrote the book, she was attached to the Centre National de Recherche Scientifique in Paris. This book, however, is based mostly upon published materials rather than personal observations. More than half of the book is devoted to data on demography, tribal groups, language, geography, economics and history. Cultural data include information on family and political organization, religion, birth, initiation, marriage, death, and the arts. The influence of French administration is mentioned throughout the book.
