Abstract
The field work for this study was carried out among the Cayapa Indians of Esmeraldas Province in northwestern Ecuador, particularly those of the Punta Venado tribal group in the Río Camerones region. The author's main focus is on the area of Cayapa social control through law and government. This approach to the analysis of the data was based on the functional-realist approach to law propounded by E. Adamson Hoebel. In setting the stage for the functional interpretations, the author provides a very good summary of Cayapa culture and ecology. Five other chapters are devoted to discussions of social organization, courtship and marriage, deviancy and law in the area of sex relations (i.e., in regard to incest, adultery and polygyny), land, property and inheritance, and the Cayapa psychological dimension. A final chapter presents his conclusions on the interpretation of his data, generally in terms of the adaptation of Cayapa legal norms to changing patterns of social customs and behavior.
