Abstract
In this work, Uberoi reinterprets data on the Kula collected by Bronislaw Malinowski in the Trobriand Islands from 1914 through 1918. Uberoi has been influenced by the British school of social anthropology. This is demonstrated in his reanalysis of Malinowski's data on political institutions and kinship. The major portion of this monograph deals with various aspects of the Kula ring and exchange system and there is also information on the political divisions of the Trobriand Islands, village structure, kin groups, marriage, gift exchange (outside the Kula), rank, and chieftainship. Chapter 3, dealing exclusively with the Dobu has not been indexed nor have general data on the Melanesians as a whole.
