The mythology of the Bella Coola Indians

[s.n.]2 • Published In 1900 • Pages: 25-50, 114-127 , 6 end plates

By: Boas, Franz.

Abstract
This source presents a resumé of some of the basic Bellacoola myths, including a brief study of native cosmology. In addition to the above, some incidental information may also be found in this source on spirits and gods, the shaman, beliefs about animals, village names and their locations, and the [n]sisau'k'[/n] and [n]ku'siut[/n] societies. The author concludes the source with a theoretical discussion on the development of the mythology of the Bellacoola. Pp. 51-113 of this source, which deal with the individual myths of specific villages rather than with the mythology of the Bellacoola as a whole, have not been processed. Six end plates provide excellent illustrations of the various representative masks used in Bellacoola ceremonials.
