Abstract
This monograph, in Spanish, is an ethnographic study of the Basques of the provinces of Vizcaya, Alava, Guipuzcoa, and Navarra in Spain and to a much less extent, those of the French Basque area of France. The time span of this work ranges from the pre-Roman period to the mid-twentieth century. The author cautions about the acceptability of the early historical data (i.e., pre-Roman to the end of the fifteenth century) to Basque cultural studies because of its diverse nature and critiques those authors who have used it as the basis of their studies on Basque history. In this document Caro Baroja focuses on the sixteenth to the mid-twentieth centuries, the period in which the historical and cultural data is more directly related to Basque ethnography. Although the author frequently uses cultural theory in his explanation of the ethnographic data, this work does provide much information on agriculture, pastoralism, dwellings, the food quest, craft specialization, concepts of ethnicity, marriage, the household, death, religion, and the fine arts (music, dancing, drama, etc.).
