Abstract: This study of social life in the period 1788-1799 is drawn largely from newspapers of the time. After an introductory chapter outlining events for the period covered, the author presents a series of topically organized chapters that are composed largely of excerpts from the newspapers, with brief explanatory remarks. Among the topics covered are: clothing, the military, riots, economic shortages, gambling, entertainments, and crime. Since the material is often satirical, the researcher should exercise some caution in his use of this source.
