Abstract
This document is primarily a study of the material culture of the Coastal and Reindeer Chukchee, based on the pre-revolutionary (i.e. before 1917) data of G. I. Mel'nikov and there is also some limited information here on culture history and social organization. In regard to general coverage the authors present in a clear and concise manner data pertinent to the basic identification of the people and their language, location, neighboring tribes with whom they come in contact, fauna and flora of the region, village locations, basic economy (with primary emphasis on reindeer husbandry and marine hunting), house construction, clothing food transportation, social order and religious beliefs, and mythology. The concluding portion of this work deals exclusively with the Sovietzation of the Chukchee in the post-war revolutionary era.
