The Burman: his life and notions

Abstract
This standard reference work discusses most aspects of Burmese life in considerable ethnographic detail. The author's career in the Burma Political Service began in the days before the last Anglo-Burmese War and spanned a good part of the time during which Burma was a British Indian Province. The data are most complete for ceremonial, political and generally exotic aspects of Burmese life-less adequate for the daily life of the ordinary citizen. However, actual behavior detail is always the rule. The author's tendency to see British rule as an overwhelming improvement in organized government and his tendency to treat chiefly the higher echelons of the old native government obscure his objectivity in dealing with Burmese native government. However, on the whole the book is remarkably free from bias, except in the chapters written during 1880-81.
