Abstract

Claude d'Abbeville was a French missionary who went to northern Brazil in 1611 and stayed on the islands of Maranhão a few months. His description of native life is remarkably accurate and sound. He gives a good account of Tupinamba astronomy. He lists all the economic plants known to the Indians. Material culture has been well described by him and no mistakes could be found in his statements. He writes with simplicity and elegance.
